The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is a multi-disciplinary Faculty of the Nāgānanda International Institute for Buddhist Studies (NIIBS).
The Department of Communication and Media Studies at Nāgānanda International Institute for Buddhist Studies is the first academic department dedicated to Applied Communication and Media Studies in Sri Lanka’s non-state university sector. Established in 2020 under the guidance of the Vice Chancellor, the department was conceptualized and founded by Senaka Senaviratne as a pioneering initiative to address the growing educational needs in Applied Communication Media Studies, integrating both theoretical and practical aspects into a professional academic stream.
The department’s primary objective is to offer a BA (Honours) Degree in Applied Communication and Media Technology, along with a range of academic programs from certificate to degree level. The curriculum is designed to meet the competitive demands of the media industry while addressing the broader media needs of the open market. To ensure high-quality practical training, the department is equipped with a fully functional media unit and a state-of-the-art studio, staffed by experienced technical professionals. These facilities enable students to gain hands-on experience in new media technologies, aligning their skills with the evolving requirements of the modern media industry following Sri Lankan qualification Framework
