
The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is a multi-disciplinary Faculty of the Nāgānanda International Institute for Buddhist Studies (NIIBS).
Welcome to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS) – the second faculty of the Nāgānanda International Institute for Buddhist Studies. The FHSS is strongly committed to its mission to develop the community and the nation at large through the dissemination and enhancement of knowledge enriching and nurturing the country’s cultural heritage. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has been a center of excellence in learning that offers a wide range of fields of study in the university system in Sri Lanka. At present, students have access to degree programs in Archaeology, Anthropology, Applied Communication and Media Technology and Diploma Courses in Cultural Archaeology, English, Chinese, and Certificate Course in Korean language which are offered by the four Departments of the Faculty. Plans are in place to introduce new degree courses and more learning opportunities for the students in modern fields of study in order to meet the changing trends in the echelons of higher education and research. The degree programs offered by the respective departments are continuously being monitored by the Internal Quality Assurance Unit and the Curriculum Development Committee to maintain its quality and expected standards. To further develop the faculty in its academic affairs, and with a view to become the vanguard of higher education, plans are underway to introduce new disciplines such as English and English Language Teaching (EELT) and Two Year Advanced Diploma in English in the near future and to provide more learning opportunities for the students in modern fields of study in order to meet the changing trends in higher education and research. The composition of our academic staff is representative of the diverse skills and expertise in many fields of study, many of whom have obtained their higher qualifications and training from reputed and recognized universities in Sri Lanka. The Faculty provides students with library facilities where they can gain access to reputed academic databases of the world. In addition, computer laboratory facilities have been provided within the Faculty as well as sports facilities being made available for our students. The faculty offers limited hostel facilities where students are expected to apply annually for the available placements.
