The Impact of Tradirional Leadership for Sustainability in Cascaded Tank Villages: In Terms of the Bellankadawala Cascade System in Sri Lanka

Abstract:

In this study, the principal researcher describes his current PhD research on socio-cultural aspect of traditional cascaded tank villages in Sri Lanka, which is the basis for this paper. Additionally, there is an examination of the traditional leadership system in cascaded tank villages based on the case of the Bellankadawala cascade system, as well as the socio-cultural impacts of this traditional leadership on the rural community. Further, it studied the informal rural governing system, social hierarchy, rituals, customs, beliefs, social norms, and practices in the community. It assesses the way they preserve traditional leadership systems with the formal government officials of the village. The research problem investigates the nature and socio-cultural consequences of traditional leadership with special reference to village headman (Gam Mahela), The Shaman who prepares rice for the Game Danaya Ritual (Muruthan Kapuwa), the chief shaman (Kapurala), In charge of paddy fields and tanks (Vel Vidane) in traditional cascaded tank communities. Those four traditional leaders were selected by considering their significant service to the villagers’ socio-cultural and economic lives. This research is an investigation of the Grama Niladhari Division of 593-Kelawa (Bellankadawala) in the city of Anuradhapura based on 22 qualitative interviews performed with a purposefully selected sample of traditional leaders, informative villagers, and irrigation officials. Secondary data collecting was based on the related literature. The narrative analysis method was used to analyze the data for this study. Still, traditional leaders are doing a highlighted task in this community for the existence of the society and the agriculture. This leadership is very important for the peasants to maintain their farming activities, water management, collective activities, social existence, and peace of the society. The study concludes that traditional leadership lays the foundation for a traditional agricultural economy and social existence based on agriculture.

Study on The Potential of Developing Medical Tourism in Sri Lanka with Special Reference to the Major Private Hospitals in Sri Lanka

Abstract:

Medical tourism is one of the emerging segments in the global tourism arena. Asia Pacific region holds the largest share in the global medical tourism sector. But in Sri Lanka, it is still in its infancy level. Since Sri Lanka is focusing on developing medical tourism, this study helps determine the factors influencing the development of medical tourism. A quantitative method is used for this study. The sample includes the administration staff who work with international patients care of major private hospitals and key institutions related to medical tourism in Sri Lanka. The simple random sampling method is used as the sampling technique. Questionnaires are conducted to collect the primary data, and the descriptive analysis method is used in analyzing data. Results reveal that facilities in private hospitals and accommodations are sufficient to attract medical tourists. But government support and promotions are highlighted as lacking factors to develop medical tourism. Furthermore, this study suggests strategies for developing human resources, improving government support, and promoting activities to develop medical tourism in Sri Lanka. Since medical tourism is a valuable niche market, the findings of this study help to increase awareness. Medical tourism is a booming segment in Sri Lanka. Therefore, new findings such as medical tourism collaboration with indigenous treatment can be applied for developing this sector. This study encourages the government to develop the medical tourism segment in the future. And also, would provide guidelines in policymaking and updating rules and standards, cooperating with relevant institutions to develop medical tourism in Sri Lanka.

Analysis of Future Demand for Sri Lankan ICT Undergraduates in ICT Industry: Mapping the ACM/IEEE Computing Degrees with Emerging Technologies

Abstract:

Sri Lanka is famous for its agricultural economy, but in recent years it is slowly shifting towards a knowledge-based economy. In a knowledge-based economy, the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry plays a critical role in increasing productivity and economic growth. ICT includes communication technology, various multimedia applications, and services that enable users to access, retrieve, store, transmit and manipulate information in a digital form. This sector has generated numerous new job opportunities, led to increased export profits, and attracted international investors for investment. Present Sri Lankan ICT industry consists of over 600 companies. According to reports from the Sri Lanka Association for Software and Services Companies, the demand for the ICT sector has increased in recent years. The increase in demand for the ICT sector led to the creation of many ICT job opportunities and open new ICT degree-awarding training institutes in Sri Lanka. Government universities, private degree awarding institutes, government vocational and tertiary training institutes, and private diploma and certificate awarding training institutes are major categories of them that offer various degree programs in ICT disciplines. As per SLASSCOM, there are fourteen job categories in the present-day ICT industry. Because of this reason undergraduates are unable to choose the most suitable ICT degree program according to the job demand. This research provides the solution for the above problem. The main objective of this research is to analyse the future demand for Sri Lankan ICT undergraduates in the ICT industry. Because of this study undergraduates can choose the ICT discipline according to the demand of the job market in the ICT industry. Association for Computing Machinery/Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (ACM/IEEE) guidelines claims that all computing degrees are classified into seven major areas which are Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Cyber Security, Information System, Information Technology, Software Engineering and Data Science. The future demand for ICT graduates in the ICT industry is examined in this research based on these seven primary disciplines. The secondary data for this research were collected from the National IT-BPM workforce survey and the university grant commission website. According to the National IT-BPM workforce survey, cloud platform is the most demand technology in recent years. Finally, undergraduates can choose the best path in the ICT field by knowing the most demanding technologies in the ICT industry.

Investigation of Ancient Pre-colonial Monuments in Jaffna, Sri Lanka

Abstract:

One of the most difficult aspects of understanding Jaffna’s history and archaeology is the peninsula’s general lack of pre-colonial monumental structures. Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, two ancient Sri Lankan cities, are surrounded by temples and stupas. These monuments date to the pre-colonial period. These historic landmarks can still be seen today. These are remarkable pieces of evidence for understanding ancient monuments and history. Even though Jaffna was once a prominent ancient trade center, no pre-colonial structures or monuments have been discovered in the region. Although temples and buildings have been mentioned numerous times throughout history, no monuments have been found. There were no previews of the study that addressed the question of why Jaffna lacked Kingdom monuments, particularly pre-colonial associated architectural structures. The purpose of this inquiry is to identify the number of pre-colonial monuments that are still in Jaffna. The second objective is to understand why Jaffna is missing kingdom-related structures like those seen in Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. The thesis does not discuss the European invasion of Jaffna or its aftermath. The study was conducted in the form of a survey, with data gathered from the Archaeology Department, Jaffna, Sri Lanka. In addition, the research utilized archival material from ancient period literatures, Portuguese references, travelers’ notes, and archaeological records. The Portuguese heritage monuments and pre-colonial monuments were mapped using GIS. The analysis has revealed that the evidence from the Five Buildings is from the Portuguese period. The other eleven are pre-colonial monuments. It is clear that several of the pre-colonial monuments were altered throughout the years until the end of the Dutch period. Prior to the Dutch period, Jaffna had four periods of monuments: ancient, Chola, Jaffna Kingdom, and Portuguese. More study should be conducted to explore the structure of pre-colonial monuments utilizing ground penetrating radar.

Technological Organizational Environmental Determinants of Human Resource Analytics Adoption

Abstract:

Managing human resources by using big data is a contemporary trend in the field of human resource management. This article aims to contribute to the available literature on human resource analytics. The main research problem of this study is “What are the key determinants of human resource analytics adoption?” This study is mainly descriptive study based on Technological- Organizational- Environmental framework. Therefore, it can be identified three research questions as; (1) What are the technological determinants of human resource analytics adoption?”, (2) “What are the organizational determinants of human resource analytics adoption?” and (3) “What are the environmental determinants of human resource analytics adoption?”. Comprehensive literature on scholarly papers published in recent five years was reviewed to address the research questions. These papers were searched in three databases which are Emerald Insight, ScienceDirect and ResearchGate. Then 14 scholarly papers were filtered with abstract review and used for the content analysis. It can be observed that, organizational determinants are the most frequent determinants while environmental determinants are the least frequent determinant in the available literature. To become effective in human resource analytics adoption, it is required to pay more and enough attention to the technological determinants like; 1) Compatibilities among systems, 2) Data authenticity, 3) Fairness of algorithms, 4) IT infrastructure & capability and 5) Complexity in human resource analytics projects. Also, it is required to pay more and enough attention to the organizational determinants like; 1) Analytical Competencies, 2) Strategic business view, 3) Focus on business issues, 4) Employee engagement and 5) Leadership support. To become effective in HRA adoption, it is required to pay enough attention to the environmental determinants like;.1) Environment of mistrust, 2) Technostress in the society, 3) Multi infrastructure nature, 4) Competitive pressure and 5) Data governance factors. Making the HRA adoption successful is very important because only a successful HRA adoption leads to become a strategic partner in the present competitive corporate environment.
