Arrival of Arhat Mahinda Thera (Mahindāgamana) as Reflected in Pāli Mahāvaṃsa

Abstract:

The entry or arrival of Arhat Mahinda Thera, a significant event that marked the official introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka, is exquisitely described in the Pāli Mahāvaṃsa, a chronicle of Sri Lankan history. Mahindāgamana, the establishment of Buddhism on the island of Lanka, emphasizes both heavenly providence and political peace. It took place under King Devānampiya Tissa’s reign. The importance of Mahinda Thera as an emissary of Emperor Ashoka is emphasized throughout the book, demonstrating how Buddhism flourished as a uniting factor over several geographical areas. According to the Mahāvaṃsa, which includes stories of Mahinda’s airborne descent and theological talks to convert the monarch and his subjects, his arrival is both miraculous and deliberate. The revolutionary effects of Buddhism on Sri Lanka’s spiritual, cultural.

Unpacking Learning Preferences of Generation Alpha Students: A Scoping Review

Abstract:

This study explores the unique educational needs and preferences of Generation Alpha, the cohort born after 2011, who are characterized as digital natives. Utilizing the scoping review methodology based on Arksey and O’Malley’s framework, the research synthesizes findings from studies published between 2010 and 2024 to analyze the ecological, behavioral, and learning traits of this generation. Key findings reveal that Generation Alpha exhibits high levels of digital literacy, a strong inclination towards technology-driven learning, and a preference for interactive, multimedia-rich, and multisensory educational experiences. They thrive in environments offering quick feedback, adaptive learning tools, and autonomy. However, challenges such as screen dependence, reduced social interactions, and risk-taking behaviors are also noted. The review highlights the importance of innovative teaching strategies tailored to their tech-savvy nature while addressing potential cognitive and emotional impacts of excessive technology use. The paper underscores the need for longitudinal research to better understand the evolving learning preferences of Generation Alpha, particularly as they transition into higher education. Future studies should focus on optimizing digital tools for fostering critical thinking, creativity, and socio-emotional skills while mitigating adverse effects like distraction and over-reliance on screens. This research provides valuable insights for educators and policymakers aiming to design effective educational frameworks for this emerging generation.

The Role of Vṛkṣāyurveda of Surapala in Environmental Protection

Abstract:

India has a rich cultural heritage that venerates mountains, rivers, and plants. Since Vedic philosophy, people have been encouraged to protect the environment by cultivating awareness of living and inanimate things. The environment is not an incidental thing to the people. It is integral and deeply intertwined with their daily lives. This research will be conducted based on the problem of how ancient India recognised the importance of environmental protection. Ancient India was concerned with environmental protection, and those theories appear to be increasingly important to humans today. The Vṛkṣāyurveda (the science of plant life) of Surapala highlights several aspects of interconnectedness to convey a significant message about humans and plants, including the importance of trees, merits and demerits of trees planted near the residence, soil, propagation, method of planting, nourishment of trees, treatments for trees, pleasure gardens, detection of underground water, and plant indicators for crop and animal production etc. A glance at the eighth verse of the text gives us a great understanding of bringing the four-fold fruits of dharma, artha, kāma, and mokṣa by growing trees and their protection. Furthermore, verse no. 22 indicates that if one plants various trees that are useful for fruits and flowers, they would be rewarded with a thousand cows and adorned with jewels. This paper intends to highlight the teachings of environmental protection by Surapala in his treatise of Vṛkṣāyurveda by understanding the science of plant life. Secondary sources related to the field will also be examined in this qualitative research, and the data will be analysed using particular methods.

The Pearl Trade Economic Power Directed by the Regional Hegemony in the Indian Ocean from the 11th to the 15th Centuries AD (Special reference to Sri Lanka)

Abstract:

Sri Lanka is best known for its pearl oysters and the famous Pearl Bank was born from the highly nutritious water flowing into the sea from Manna Bay. These natural pearls have been valued for centuries for their excellent quality as gems and jewelry. As a result, the pearl has become a metaphor for something rare, delicate, admirable and precious. Sri Lanka in the past was famous for precious pearls and it was one of the main sources that induced foreign invaders to the Island. Accordingly, Sri Lanka has been involved in the active pearl trade since ancient times by connecting with various political powers in the Indian Ocean. At one time it was an intermediate trading center and at other times an Island with natural pearl reefs, the sources record important information. However, the purpose of this research paper is to further explore whether the importance of Sri Lankan pearls increases or decreases in the hegemony that operated in the eastern and western parts of the Indian Ocean during the relevant period. Accordingly, the importance of Sri Lanka’s pearl trade and Sri Lanka’s contribution to that trade in the regional flexibility of the Indian Ocean trade from the 8th to the 15th century AD is to be studied. Local and foreign literary sources will be discussed to obtain relevant information. Further analysis of available data to identify pearl reefs, pearl trading centers, demand elasticities and monopolies in the Indian Ocean.
