Field Study: Nawinna Bandaranaike Memorial Ayurveda Research Institute

A field study was conducted on June 17, 2025, at the Nawinna Bandaranaike Memorial Ayurveda Research Institute and the Nawinna Ayurveda Hospital premises, as part of the course requirements for the subject unit ‘Alternative Medical Systems’ under the Honours Degree Programme in Anthropology for third-year students of the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nāgānanda International Institute for Buddhist Studies.

During this visit, a series of short lectures were delivered on Ayurvedic medical practices, Unani medicine, Panchakarma treatments, and related topics. The field study also included observations and interviews concerning the current operations of the Nawinna Bandaranaike Memorial Ayurveda Research Institute and the Nawinna Ayurveda Hospital.

This academic activity was conducted with the participation of Professor Jayantha Jayasiri from the Department of Anthropology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Dr. Kanishka Wijayarathna and Dr. Amila Nuwan Srishan from the Nāgānanda International Institute for Buddhist Studies, along with third-year anthropology undergraduates.
